After years of being trapped in the foster care system, STEVE PEMBERTON, a bi-racial orphan who was told he didn't have a chance in the world, went on a search for his biological family. He discovered gaps in a health care system that greatly impacted his mother and his father's life. He found that his paternal grandmother had died of heart disease at just 40 years old, leading to the immediate disintegration of the family, including leaving Pemberton's father as an orphan. In another part of the country, a similar narrative was unfolding for his mother.
Steve understands firsthand how your zip code can influence your access to healthcare and impact lives and communities. Although the notion of health inequities are not new, COVID-19 is shining a light on the flaws of our health system. Steve shares his personal story to help elevate the conversation around health disparities and points us towards solutions so that everyone might have a "Chance in The World."
