There’s a popular belief that in today’s world that feminism isn’t needed anymore. After all, we can do anything or be anything, right? That’s anything but the truth, says Author and Activist Feminista Jones. “Women and girls continue to face devastating gender-based oppression, and it’s clear the world needs feminism and feminist activism as much as it ever did,” she says. In this keynote, Jones reveals the importance of not only embracing feminism but intersectional feminism in the 21^st century, where everyone has a seat at the table; and how if everyone works together, they can empower each other to be successful in their personal and professional lives.

Each year, more than 1.3 million American women experience domestic violence or sexual assault, with the majority of incidents never reported to the police. For Black women, it’s even more of an issue, says Author and Activist Feminista Jones. They are almost three times as likely to experience death as a result of domestic violence/intimate partner violence than White women. And while Black women only make up 8% of the population, 22% of homicides that result from domestic violence happen to Black Women and 29% of all victimized women, making it one of the leading causes of death for Black women ages 15 to 35. So, what can we do to stop it? In this keynote, Jones—a victim of domestic violence—shares stories about surviving and healing from this trauma, why Black women experience domestic violence and sexual assault at such a disproportionate rate and how you can become an advocate for victims of gender-based violence. It’s a moving keynote filled with steps to take to stop this epidemic of brutality.

At heart, Feminista Jones will always be a social worker. She spent years on the frontlines helping others. She not only witnessed the cruelty of poverty, mental health issues, homelessness and hunger, but also experienced it herself while growing up in Philadelphia. In this keynote, Jones, an author, advocate and writer, reveals her own story and shares how organizations can address hunger and poverty in large cities, become advocates for disenfranchised people and provide outreach and services for those who are suffering the most.
